Influence des rejets urbains sur la contamination de la rivière de Morlaix par les métaux ArchiMer

Raw and processed outflow from the Morlaix city sewage treatment plant were monitored every fourth hour for a 24 hours period, and monthly for eight months. The urban Hg, Cd, Cu, Zn and Pb outflow was shown to be much less than the river-borne flux. Sediments from the catchment area and estuary show that the influence of the town on the metal concentrations is limited to the harbour basin. The metal concentations are essentially controlled by granulometry.

Distribution of Cd and Hg in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron ArchiMer

The study of Cd and Hg distribution in the sediments, water and suspended matter of the Bay of Marennes-Oléron provided the opportunity to identify the factors governing the distribution of these two contaminants throughout the bay. On one hand, these elements are associated with the continental inputs from the Charente river which settle on arrivaI at the mouth of the estuary and in the eastern part of the bay. The Cd and Hg present in these deposits are associated with POC, as weIl as with Mn and Fe oxides and hydroxides. The early diagenesis of Cd and Hg has been studied in different coastal areas (vasière Ouest-Gironde, Pertuis d'Antioche, baie de Marennes-Oléron). For these two metals, the fluxes at the sediment-water interface have been calculated. Considering only molecular diffusion, the diffusionnal fluxes of Cd and Hg to the colurnn water are negligible with regard to both the particular fluxes to the sediments and the inputs of the "Gironde" and "Charente" ·,estuaries. In estuarine environment, cadmium has a nonconservative behavior. It can be present under various species: dissolved (mineral and organic complexes), colloidal and particulate forms (adsorbed, precipitated), or integrated by various mechanisms in the organisms. This distribution is the result of processes (physical, chemical and biological) which are controlled by many factors (salinity, pH, Eh, nature and concentration of suspended matter, primary production). Their aim is to reproduce numerically the biogeochemical processes observed in the field or laboratory. Mercury transformations and exchanges in a high turbidity estuary: The role of organic matter and amorphous oxyhydroxides ArchiMer

The speciation and partition of mercury in a macrotidal estuary (Seine estuary, France) was studied in order to explore the role of the high turbidity zone (HTZ) in mercury transfer to the adjacent coastal waters. Water and particles were analyzed to determine the concentrations of various mercury species, including monomethylmercury and the inorganic fraction. The exchangeable particulate mercury, which varies with salinity, and the mercury fraction associated with the amorphous oxyhydroxides were evaluated. The distribution of dissolved mercury species during early mixing suggests non-conservative behavior of organically bound mercury at the head of the estuary. Le projet à pour but de modéliser la dispersion des immersions des boues de dragage, à partir de modèles numériques de manière à pouvoir évaluer le devenir de la charge particulaire et des contaminants associés. Les résultats des expérimentations en laboratoire montrent, qu'à l'échelle représentative du temps de séjour des particules dans la colonne d'eau du champ proche (quelques heures), on ne constate pas de solubilisation des métaux. Monitoring coastal contamination by trace metals pollution using mollusks bivalves as quantitative bioindicators is widely performed in many international biomonitoring programs. In this purpose, modeling metal dynamic in marine mussels is a reliable tool. It allows understanding the bioaccumulation process which results from the interactions between biological, chemical and environmental factors. To calibrate such a model, kinetic experiments on uptake and elimination were conducted on three Mediterranean sites chosen on the basis of their different nutritive and chemical characteristics.

In situ kinetics of mercury bioaccumulation in mytilus galloprovincialis estimated by transplantation experiments ArchiMer

Monitoring coastal contamination by trace metals pollution using mollusks bivalves as quantitative bioindicators is widely performed in many international biomonitoring programs. For this purpose, studying mercury dynamic in marine mussels is a reliable tool. In situ experiments on uptake and elimination kinetics were conducted in three Mediterranean sites, chosen on the basis of their contamination levels. Mussels were transplanted from a clean area to a highly contaminated one and then transferred back to a clean site. This approach makes it possible to define bioaccumulation factors and uptake and elimination rates consistently with the real environmental conditions.

Bioturbation at the water-sediment interface of the Thau Lagoon: impact of shellfish farming ArchiMer

Quantifier les processus de remaniement sédimentaire procure une vision nouvelle du fonctionnement des écosystèmes benthiques de l'étang de Thau, lieu d'une importante production ostréicole. Afin d'évaluer les taux de bioturbation des sédiments de surface, des profils de deux traceurs radioactifs, le béryllium 7Be (T1/2 = 53 jours) et le thorium 234Th (T1/2 = 24.1 jours) ont été mesurés à partir de carottes sédimentaires prélevées entre décembre 2001 et décembre 2006. Artificial media are used in physiological studies of microalgae to maintain consistent conditions from one experiment to another and these media must be adapted to the needs of the organism studied. The artificial medium, in this case named diatom artificial medium (DAM), was designed to maintain long-term cultures of Haslea ostrearia and 19 other planktonic microalgae, and to allow physiological studies related to metal metabolism. Trace metals assessment in water, sediment, mussel and seagrass species - Validation of the use of Posidonia oceanica as a metal biomonitor ArchiMer

The accumulation of trace metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb) was measured in water, sediment, the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Samples were collected in three locations of the north-western Mediterranean (Canari, Livorno and Porto-Torres) which present different levels and sources of human impact. Analyses in the different compartments (water, sediment, M. galloprovincialis and P. oceanica) have allowed to identify Canari as the most Cd, Co, Cr and Ni contaminated site; Livorno as the most Hg contaminated and Porto-Torres as the most Pb contaminated. PROJET PEPS La Réunion (Pré étude: Echantillonnage Passif pour la Surveillance de la contamination chimique) Mise en place d'échantillonneurs passifs pour la caractérisation de la contamination chimique des masses d'eau côtières réunionnaises ArchiMer

Ce projet a permis de mettre en évidence le potentiel des techniques d'échantillonnage passif (DGT, POCIS, SBSE) à "grande échelle" (18 masses d'eau côtières: 6 récifales, 10 "mer ouverte" et 2 portuaires) au cours de 2 campagnes réalisées en période sèche et humide (post cyclonique). L'étude montre l'opérationnalité de ces systèmes en terme de réduction des coûts et de rapidité d'obtention des résultats, mais aussi en terme de facilité de mise en œuvre (par du personnel préalablement formé). Ces techniques ont pu être transférées aux acteurs locaux en charge de la surveillance de l'état de la contamination chimique des eaux. The METROC project objective is to assess gross and net chemical contaminant flows related to large Mediterranean coastal cities, with a first application to the Marseilles area.
